As we move into this new era of Star Wars, I want to take a look back at the saga films, how my perception of the films have changed over time, and the ever changing canon of Star Wars.
Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace, as we all know, was released in May of 1999 to an almost unimaginable level of anticipation and expectation. The film that we got is beloved by some, derided by others, but has had a significant influence of Star Wars and Star Wars fandom since it’s release.
For me personally, The Phantom Menace is my least favorite of the Star Wars films. While I do love the film and enjoy watching it, I can’t help but notice that it is a flawed film. When it works though, it is spectacular. In 1999, I was pumped and couldn’t wait for the film to come out. Going to see the movie on opening day turned out to be very special for me because it was my wife and I’s first date. So this movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
