It’s been a little while since the announcement of Thrawn’s upcoming appearance in season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, so I don’t want to spend any more time in excitement mode. I think we’re passed all that now. I know I am. Hopefully, now, we can get into the nitty-gritty, like: How will Thrawn’s story be handled? Will his character stay true to the books? What about an overall analysis of his character?
” You couldn’t have grown up a Star Wars fan without encountering Thrawn and Heir to the Empire. It was a significant part of most of our lives.”
Truer words could not have been spoken…within the last 90 days. Thrawn was “thee,” premier bad guy in the legends library. No one even came close to Thrawn’s calculating ways. Like I’ve said before: the reason why Thrawn has is still widely adored by the fandom is because he is the best at what he does.
There’s a dark part of human nature that is attracted to the bad guys (see Darth Vader), but the Empire has always been, dubiously known for their incompetent leadership and the well-known fact that stormtroopers couldn’t hit a Death Star sized target if it was right in front of them. Remarkably, we have this bad guy who is good at doing what he does, and he’s so good at being bad. It’s truly fascinating and simply put, he gets the job done. The question is will Thrawn’s character in Rebels, resemble what we know from the novels? Naturally I have no idea, Lucasfilm must’ve lost my number, so I’ll just give you my honest opinion. As long as it fits the story, Thrawn’s character will remain true to the books. How can it not? Tarkin needs someone who will remove the Ghost crew from the equation, again, Tarkin needs someone who will get the job done.
So if Thrawn’s character remains true, how will his story be handled? Can Dave Filoni and crew really use Thrawn for only one season? Is it possible for Thrawn to get killed off in Rebels? This is my take. Regardless of how many seasons of Rebels are left, Thrawn is too good to be killed off. If Thrawn does what he is assigned to do there will be no Ghost crew for season 4. Perhaps part of the Ghost crew gets offed, and the remaining two (Kanan and Ezra I’m looking at you), go into hiding? I’m really bad at this speculation stuff, I’d rather just wait and see what happens, but I have a hard time picturing anyone of the main cast or Thrawn getting killed off this season. I do find it extremely likely that we will see Thrawn in future media, not including the Thrawn novel do out next spring (which is a prequel to Rebels).
A few years ago, I took a humanities course at Southern New Hampshire University where we discussed the art from different cultures, and what we could learn from each culture from their art. Guess who popped into my head? Grand Admiral Thrawn. I emailed my instructor and told her about how Thrawn was able to defeat his enemies according to what he learned from their art. I asked her if this was really possible. She wasn’t sure, but the theory sounded interesting.
Getting back on track and to the present. There are two scenes in the Rebels season 3 trailer that I found most interesting. First, the one of Thrawn holding what appears to be some sort of celebratory or ornamental ancient artifact. In mythology, certain cultures hold tributes to their gods for a prosperous life or good crops. I wonder if this device was perhaps a tool for a young man’s rite of passage? The second frame was of Thrawn, in his office, studying a large stone object that had the rebel logo painted on it. Surrounding the room were holos of Ezra, a face of an unknown woman, Hera as a young girl with her parents, and others that looked like cave paintings. On Thrawn’s desk, is a mask similar to the one Kanan adorned when Maul blinded him in the season 2 finale.
Thrawn is by far, one of the most, fascinating characters in the Star Wars galaxy. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the great writers for Rebels handle his infamous reputation. I would love to hear other opinions or thoughts so please, feel free to leave a comment. I love to talk Star Wars any day anytime.
