Character Moments: Palpatine
Welcome to another article that focuses on Star Wars Character Moments. These are defining moments within the Star Wars saga that shows ‘a point at which the essential nature or character of a person, group, etc., is revealed or identified.’
Today, this character moment will focus on Palpatine.
For this article, I asked several of The Cantina Cast bloggers what they believed is the one moment that defines Palpatine’s character.
So, as we explore the character moments of Sheev Palpatine, we will be focusing on his ‘key moment(s)’ in his history or life that to us, signify his complete allegiance to the dark side of the Force. Kat Lucky believes his most pivotal moment has not yet been revealed to us but more than likely has already happened.
Sean Moore believes it is when the spidery-mastermind, that is Palpatine, is forced to confront his ex-apprentice Maul on Mandalore — they have proven to be more of a threat to his grand schemes than he was comfortable with. But, Paul DePaola believes the entire last half of Revenge of The Sith is the moment.
Now, Eric Onkenhout believes this moment is when he defeats his master to become the most powerful Sith Lord of his time.
Rebecca Benjamin believes it is when he meets Anakin on Naboo and says he’ll watch over his career with great interest.
That, to me, anoints his intent for the future.
Mike Jett believes that it is when he suggests to Padmé to move for a vote of no confidence in Valorum, knowing that the events he created will ensure his nominated as Chancellor — that’s pretty crucial to his takeover.
Tom Burke believes is that it is when he orders Anakin to behead Dooku. That’s when you realize the influence he had over him and that he had him on the hook.
Ted Davey believes that Palpatine is tough character to come up with just one moment. However, a key moment is when he lies to Darth Vader about what happened to Padmé at the end of Revenge of The Sith. Palpatine gained in the short-term, but planted a seed that would cultivate into his own demise in the long-term.
All these are wonderful Palpatine moments, but none of these are the one moment, in my opinion, that reveals or identifies this character fully. The reason is that Palpatine has two different personas. The kind political leader and the evil Sith Lord. Within the Star Wars Saga there are not many times when both personas can been seen in the same moment. The one moment that I believes does this well is the conversation between Padmé and Palpatine during the Season 3, Episode 10, Heroes on Both Sides. This moment shows the following characteristics that define Palpatine:
This is a moment when both of Palpatine’s personas are on display for the viewer to see during this scene. He is talking peace with Padmé as a kind leader should be, but based on the look on his face he is thinking like the evil Darth Sidious. I knew, in that moment, he was thinking that Padme’s friend, Bonteri needed to be eliminated in order to keep his plans on track for the elimination of the Jedi and to rule the Galaxy!
So what is your opinion?
Do you agree with me?
Is there another moment that you feel defines this character?
