Recently I had the great pleasure of reading a new Star Wars book published by DK Publishing, Star Wars Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, written by the veteran team of Adam Bray and Michael Kogge, along with Kerrie Dougherty and Cole Horton.
Much like another book published by DK this year, LEGO Star Wars: Chronicles of the Force, Star Wars Absolutely Everything You Need to Know, is filled with so much information; even the Lucasfilm Story Group’s Pablo Hidalgo would have a hard time remembering all of its contents.
Let’s start at the beginning. The cover of the book has a silhouetted image of Yoda incorporated into the traditional Star Wars logo. Yoda, of course, inspires wisdom and knowledge—something we are about to gain upon opening the book. The starfield on the cover reveals that we are making the jump to hyperspace; we are bound for a journey of knowledge, and Yoda leads the way.
Upon opening the book we are greeted by a beautiful collage of images of some of our favorite characters—from Anakin Skywalker, Rey, Ezra Bridger, and Ahsoka Tano to name a few. On the facing page are the Contents, in which there are five chapters, and within these chapters are several subsections pertaining to each character, species, ship, planet, or weapon/technology, depending on which chapter you’re reading. Each subsection reveals a two-page layout that barely contains the wealth of information it holds.
Chapter one is dedicated to the Protectors of the Galaxy, a.k.a. the good guys like Hera Syndulla, the Jedi Council, and the Wookiee’s. Chapter two is all about the bad guys, bounty hunters, and the underworld; the likes of the Sith, Cad Bane, and Hondo Ohnaka reside here. Chapter three encompasses all of the weird and wonderful beings in the Star Wars galaxy, such as Ewoks, the arena beasts seen in Attack of the Clones, and other various fauna seen throughout the galaxy. Chapter four is in a galaxy far, far away with all the planets, ships, technology and weapons. Here we see places like Naboo and Hoth, ships like the Millennium Falcon and The Ghost, and weapons like the Death Star I and II. Finally, chapter five ushers in the new era with characters like Rey and the First Order Stormtrooper.
Each section really requires a few looks before moving on to the next. There is enough trivia on each page to last a Wookiee’s lifetime. There are different types of facts and trivia, and are divided up into their own category, and the categories are plentiful:“Best Known For” gives us an example of what each character is known for in the films or the television shows. “Really?!” gives us a factoid that is usually on the extreme side of a characters exploits. For example, in Count Dooku’s section it mentions how he cut of Anakin’s hand in Attack of the Clones. “Fan Facts” usually has a real world connection. “Strange but true” is pretty self-explanatory. “Peek behind the scenes” is my personal favorite, where little bits of trivia of how the films were made are revealed. “Q and A” asks a question about a subject and then gives the answer. Here’s where you’ll find out why tauntauns smell so bad. Rankings like “Top 5” are scattered throughout the book, rankings are always fun. “In Numbers” will usually tell us how tall someone is, or stats like how long Darth Sidious was the Emperor, or how many years Yoda has been training Jedi. “Fast Facts” basically gives us the rundown of each characters biography, aka their homeworld, species, affiliation, ect… “Quotes” is also self-explanatory. “WOW!” not surprisingly, are usually in large bold print because of the wow-factor they reveal, which is typically a large amount of money or a population of a planet. “Who trained who” is an interesting little section which shows Jedi or Sith in descending order of who trained who—sort of a family tree of Force users.
Even though this book is geared towards kids, it is great fun and can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike; long-time fans and those new to the Star Wars galaxy. Star Wars Absolutely Everything You Need to Know is a treasure trove of Star Wars facts that, is well put together and well organized. It comes highly recommended.
I want to thank DK Publishing for providing this review copy.
