Character Moments: From Princess Leia to General Organa
Welcome to another article that focuses on Star Wars Character Moments. These are the defining moments within the Star Wars saga that shows ‘a point at which the essential nature or character of a person, group, etc., is revealed or identified.’
Today, this character moment will focus on Princess and General Leia Organa.
SFR Brigade member JC Hay believes that it is when she gives up an abandoned base on Dantooine, while Tarkin threatened her home on Alderaan.
Kevin McLaughlin, fellow SFR Brigade member also agrees with JC hay and states…
I’m thinking her pivotal moment was when she was threatened with the destruction of her entire family and almost everyone else she knew – Alderaan – and she still LIED to Tarkin AND Vader about the location of the rebel base.
SFR Brigade member Kate Fitzpatrick and Author Pippa Jay believe the one moment is when Leia snatches the gun from Luke and takes charge of her two clueless, planless ‘rescuers’. Author and GeekMom.com blogger Corrina Lawson agrees stating that
…the moment when she takes charge of her rescue, the trope of “princess needing rescue” is completely flipped.
SFR Brigade member Debra Jess believes it is when she comforts Luke right after Ben is struck down by Darth Vader.
I think it was when she was comforting Luke after Ben died. It showed that yes, she can take charge, but knows when to pull back because someone is hurting.
SFR Brigade member Lyra Torres believes it is when she takes it upon herself to rescue Han in Return of the Jedi.
I have to say that her most character defining moment happens off screen and in the Bloodline novel. It’s the moment when she is confronted in front of the entire Senate and the Galaxy at large via holonet about her hidden parentage. What was meant to be a private and endearing moment had turned into an ugly and tainted revelation of a seeming betrayal. It’s how Leia handles this moment that makes her the prominent character she is in the current timeline of the saga. Leia truly endures so much of the Skywalker legacy and history.
All these are wonderful Leia moments, but none of these is the one moment, in my opinion, that reveals or identifies her character fully. I believe it is when we first see is brought before Darth Vader in Star Wars: A New Hope.
This moment shows the following characteristics that define Leia:
Riley Blanton agrees with this and points this out in TheStarWarsReport article Princess Leia Organa and the Courage and Wisdom Found in Youth
When you watch that scene as a kid you get a very healthy idea that Darth Vader is not a guy you want to mess with. And you know what? Princess Leia doesn’t care. She doesn’t give a Womprat’s bum. (I’ve always wanted to use “Womprat’s bum” in a sentence) She looks fear in the face and stares it down. Think about it. She does this as a 19-year-old kid. That’s what’s so amazing about Princess Leia as a character. As I watch these movies as an adult, I have a greater appreciation for how Leia never takes crap from anyone. She has this unusual ability to face the greatest terror in the galaxy and talk to him as if she is his peer, as if she has nothing to fear, which we all know is not true. Because in the above-mentioned scene, we see how terribly evil Darth Vader is.
So what is your opinion?
Do you agree with me or do you agree with one of the others moments mentioned above?
Is there another moment that you feel defines her character better?
