The annual Friendship Festival at Yokota Air Base in Japan came and went again this year on September 17th and 18th. The festival is an event where the base opens their gates and people can go on base to enjoy performances from both American and Japanese performers, food from over 75 vendors[i], static aircraft displays from both U.S. military and the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force, demonstrations from the 36th Airlift Squadron, Japanese Police, 374th Security Forces K-9 unit and more, as well as a spectacular fireworks display[ii]. This event is enormous, as over 185,000 people attended the event last year[ii].
And because both the U.S. and Japan share a deep love for a galaxy far, far away, the 501st Japanese Garrison knew this was not an event to be missed. The following pictures were taken Sunday the 18th. Following a performance by the Yokota Tanabata Dancers, the 501st came out in front of the stage to show off their costumes and take photos with festivalgoers. Consisting of multiple nationalities as well as all variety of characters, the Japanese 501st brought many smiles to festival attendees.
