I began my Rogue Friday fun on Thursday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. The following is a live blog of sorts, spanning nearly 24 hours of Rogue One product hunting, enjoy!
[2:15]PM– Dixie Highway Kmart — this is the only remaining Kmart in Louisville. No sign of the Jyn Erso exclusive.
[2:30]PM– Dixie highway Walmart — found three of the new two packs and the A-Wing. The two packs scanned on the price checker, but would not scan at check out. The A-Wing was available, so I purchased that.
5PM– “my” Walmart. This is where I had the major score on Force Friday last year. On the pegs — 6 inch Jyn and Rey; six 5 carded figures. I grabbed the 6-inch Jyn, and the carded Jyn, Kanan, K2, and Sabine, but none would ring up. Someone had clearly emptied out the rest of the Black Series wave. So I decided to come back later.
[5:20]PM– Springhurst Target near the Walmart — this store had an end cap loaded with pegs and price tags for new merchandise, but no figures yet. Still, this may be a good place to visit in the morning.
*domestic/child care duties
[9:08]PM Westport Target (closest to my home) — no end cap set up, empty pegs in aisle- not looking promising at all.
[9:18]PM– drive by Toys-R-Us, two dudes in line at door.
[9:27]PM– Bashford Target — pegs stocked with old stuff, no evidence of new product or special section.
[9:32]PM– Bashford Walmart — old figures on pegs, but also a plannogram posted near the pegs for new figure. No boxes sitting out.
[9:53]PM– Middletown Target. Greeted at door by two death troopers; has end cap with moving AT-ACT! End cap empty at the moment… Looks promising, opens at 8 am, possible morning destination.
[10:01]PM– Middletown Walmart — old stuff on pegs, no sign of new product, disappointing as I was hoping they would have stuff out early.
[10:09]PM– Middletown Kroger — found first Rogue One figure here 2 weeks ago. Same two Sarco Planks and Ello Asty as the last time I was here.
[10:25]PM– back to ‘my’ Walmart — Sabine and Jyn (carded), but nothing else! WTF! Someone cleaned out most of what was there a few hours before. Back to Toys-R-Us to wait in line.
[10:45]PM– Toys-R-Us — four additional people in line, so I’m lucky number 7. A generally happy group, especially one very excited late teen/early 20-something who entertained the whole group for over an hour… One 501st member not in uniform. The two original guys I saw early got in line at 4PM.
[11:15]PM– Manager came out and gave us the layout. One end cap with carded figures and some Black Series by the door across from the table with free Funko Pop T-Shirt and poster, one larger section in an open area on other side of ‘Lego Wall.’ He said “no limit” on figures except for the Black Series Exclusive Hovertank Driver, and hinted they only got one case of those. Also hinted that more product than last year, but not an overwhelming amount. Very nice and cool man.
[11:40]PM– Jeffery the Giraffe comes out, gives high fives, disappears.
[11:56]PM– getting prepped, 13 people in line total. Guy number 6 not buying anything, so I am hoping I can go in with first wave.
[11:58]PM– now 16 in line. Getting nervous. Manager having a side conversation with first two guys in line. He then announces he is going to let them in alone for a minute or so.
[12:01]AM– those two go it, we all watch from outside where they go — my plan was to hit the bigger section.
[12:02]AM– grab cart on way in door. Go straight to Black Series — still 3 Hovertank Drivers on pegs. Grab that first then grab two Deathtroopers (I could not resist!) Finish out with a K-2SO and Cassian, leave Jyn (ordered her online). Move to carded figures, finish out that wave. Grab the 12 inch electronic Rebels-style Vader. Go to other section and get the two 2-packs I missed out on earlier in the day. Go back to other section and see Tie Striker, grab that. Still plenty of carded figures left so I switch out for ones with best paint apps. Get in line to pay.
[12:19]AM– exit store, it’s raining pretty hard, try to protect poster. The same thing happened last year I am pretty sure!
[12:30]AM– unload car, show the wife the haul. She asks how much I spent. I deflect by saying I only spent half my budget. Get online and look at others’ experiences, can’t sleep.
*slept maybe 5-6 hours
[7:45]AM– Middletown Walmart — nothing new in store. Walmart has been a total bust this year!
[7:51]AM– Middletown Target, no cars in lot, the hype is real. I am the only one at section save an employee with a full basket, seems he took most of one of the Black Series cases. Grabbed two Funko Pops (Deathtrooper and Shoretrooper).
[8:22]AM-Disney Store — here for curiosity as I’m swearing off Elite Series figures. Of course then I just bought a K-2SO and a Rogue One gift bag. Okay I’m limiting myself to Elite Series droids only. The Baze and Chirrut figs look great though, as did the Jyn actually. No one else there, felt bad for employees (three of them).
[8:41]AM– Bashford Walmart — hoping for 3.75 black series. Turned corner and ran into untouched shipper, all 6-inch Black Series, no 3.75 inch figures at all- carded or Black Series. Happy there is product though! Had massive cardboard U-Wing on floor, not hung yet. Can’t wait to see that!
[9:06]AM– back to lone remaining Kmart in town. Heard there was an Exclusive 6-inch Jyn sighting last night. Two guys here waiting, having employee check in back. Guess I’ll wait too…
[9:18]AM– still waiting, employee can’t find it and is calling manager. One guy says he saw it on shelf last week and they wouldn’t sell it to him. I like the two guys waiting and we talk a lot.
[9:25]AM– pay dirt, she came out with two cases, 4 per case, worth the wait. She was very nice and we all thanked her profusely (I did, at least).
[9:36]AM– went to Dixie Highway Walmart next door where I was denied the two packs yesterday, those two packs were all they had on the shelves — no shipper to be found.
Back across town for Toys-R-Us opening
10AM– Toys-R-Us — stock has not been replenished from last night, only Rey and Kylo 6 inch left, only one two-pack left (guess which?), and the less popular carded figures — Kanan, Stormtrooper, Ground Crew. Oh and a ton of Force Awakens figures.
[10:05]AM– Westport Target, nearest my home, death troopers at door. Star Wars end cap picked pretty clean. Still have one of each 6-inch Black Series except the Deathtrooper. Good selection of all carded figures left, except Sabine. No two packs left.
[10:15]AM– going home, very satisfied- I found everything I wanted except the 3.75-inch Black Series. I will probably check ‘my’ Walmart later when I go pick up the kids.
Overall, I had a great time. Drove around listening to music with the windows down all night last night while hunting — I felt like a teenager again. Waiting in line with other fans was much more fun than pushing a cart around Walmart for two hours by myself like I did last year.
My experience, much like last year, seems very common to what others are reporting around the country.
Good hunting this weekend everyone! Post your story below!
